are some affordable alternatives. Take this swell little compound in the hipster Echo Park nabe, on the market for a very acceptable $595K. The one bed/one bath cottage (with an additional study/baby's room) has an especially inviting entry behind a wrought iron gate that involves boxwoods, trees, a stone patio and this gurgling fountain (left). The interior has been thoroughly updated with new plumbing, electrical, central air, etc., and there's a working fireplace for chilly nights and large windows with canyon views for daydreaming.
